Asylum seeker Hamed Kianipanah, 34, Rapist who groomed and controlled victim jailed for nine years

29 July 2025

A rapist who groomed and controlled his victim has been jailed for nine years.

Hamed Kianipanah, 34, was found guilty of raping a woman at an address in Richmondshire in 2022 following a trial at Teesside Crown Court on 5 June.

Kianipanah, of Brook Road, Brent, was given a nine-year jail term as well as an additional three years on licence when he was sentenced on Monday.

He was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely and has been made subject to a restraining order.

During his trial, the jury heard evidence that Kianipanah had groomed and controlled the woman around the time of the rape.

However, she found the courage to make a report to North Yorkshire Police in 2023, sparking a two-year investigation.

The woman had since also had access to a range of professional support and care, police said.

Temporary Det Sgt Quita Readman said: “With her support, we carried out a thorough investigation capturing the whole story of the grooming stages Kianipanah engaged in before and after the rape, maintaining a level of control over the survivor.

“I have nothing but praise for the bravery of the survivor in this case.

“It also shows it is never too late to make a report to the police and seek support from the Sexual Assault Referral Centre and organisations such as Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS).

“We are here to help you – please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

A rapist has been jailed after ‘grooming and controlling’ his victim.

A jury found Hamed Kianipanah, 36, guilty of raping the woman following a trial at Teesside Crown Court. Kianipanah was sent to prison for nine years plus an additional three years on license for raping a woman at an address in Richmondshire in 2022.

Following a trial at Teesside Crown Court, Kianipanah was found guilty on June 5 of having unconsented sex with the victim. The jury heard evidence that Kianipanah had groomed and controlled the woman around the time of the rape.

However, she found the courage to make a report to North Yorkshire Police in 2023. This sparked a two-year investigation led by Temporary Detective Sergeant Quita Readman from Hambleton and Richmondshire CID.

T/DS Readman said: “When she felt ready to do so, she bravely approached the police and disclosed what had happened to her. She also got access to a range of professional support and care that is readily available to all survivors of rape and sexual assaults.

As well as the prison sentence, Kianipanah, of Brook Road, Brent, London, has also been placed on the Register of Sex Offenders and been made subject of a restraining order.

Hamed Kianipanah repeatedly told his victim that the sex attack was consensual throughout the ordeal in 2022.

The 34-year-old was described as manipulative and a domestic abuser after he was found guilty following a trial at Teesside Crown Court.

Dr Christopher Wood, prosecuting, said the rape had a devastating impact on the victim who suffered from a number of medical conditions.

The court heard how Kianipanah had befriended his victim while he was living in the Stockton area while his asylum application was being processed.

Dr Wood said the defendant took to the internet to find sexual partners while he was living apart from his wife.

He said the couple entered a consensual relationship before the defendant forced himself on the woman just before they were due to head out to a party after she handed over a large sum of money to him.
