A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of a string of offences.

34 year old Mustafa Ramzan of Wenlock Mews in London was found guilty last week on 8 December 2023 for rape, attempted rape, sexual assault by penetration, robbery and criminal damage.

On Thursday 11 December at Ipswich Crown Court he was sentenced to 10 years in jail. He was given 10 years in jail for rape, with concurrent sentences of imprisonment as follows: attempted rape 7 years, sexual assault by penetration 6 years and robbery 4 years.

In April 2020 the victim, a woman aged in her late 40s met Ramzan in Bury St Edmunds for a pre-arranged meeting. The pair went to a nearby small room, described as a security lodge on Rougham Road where Ramzan raped her. The victim left the site in a distressed and partially dressed state and during the incident she was robbed of all of her money amounting £200 leaving just £10, with damage also caused to the victim’s mobile phone.

Following police enquiries Ramzan was arrested on the 18 April 2020 and subsequently charged with the offences.

DC Stephanie Rose, the investigating officer in the case and from Bury St Edmunds Safeguarding team said: “This was an extremely traumatic experience for the victim and one that she would have had to re-visit in the court room due to Ramzan’s not guilty plea, an experience which would have only added to her trauma.

“I would like to pay tribute to the victim’s bravery and this case does clearly demonstrate that we are absolutely committed to preventing violence against women and girls, pursuing perpetrators, supporting victims and continuing to strengthen and improve our response to ensure the safety of our communities.

“We urge victims of any serious violent or sexual offence to come forward and we remain committed to supporting all victims who report sexual offences.”

Suffolk has a dedicated Sexual Assault Referral Centre) and a team of specialist ISVA’s (independent sexual violence advisors) who support any victims who come forward to report rape or serious sexual offences, either to police or directly to the SARC.
