Portuguese national Caitano Azavedo, 40, jailed for six years for serious sexual assault of woman in Aberdeen

A man has been sentenced to six years in prison for the serious sexual assault of a woman in Aberdeen.

Caitano Azavedo, 40, attacked the woman in the King Street and Linksfield Road areas of the city on Sunday, 22 October, 2023.

He appeared at the High Court in Glasgow for sentencing on Friday, 9 January, 2026, after previously being found guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday, 2 December, 2025.

Detective Inspector Mark Lambley said: “Azavedo is a sexual predator who now faces the consequences of his depraved actions. This was a horrifying attack on a young woman, and I hope this sentence brings her some sense of closure.

“I would urge anyone who has been a victim of physical or sexual abuse to report it to us, regardless of when it happened. All reports are thoroughly investigated, and we have specially trained officers and partner agencies who will support you throughout.”

A sex predator who pulled a young woman into a secluded area before subjecting her to a rape ordeal was jailed on Tuesday.

Caitano Azavedo, 40, grabbed his victim by the hand before sexually assaulting her during the attack in Aberdeen. Portuguese national Azavedo had denied assaulting and raping the woman at King Street in the city and at a field in Aberdeen Sports Village on October 22 in 2023 during a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.

But a jury found him guilty of the crime during which he seized her hand, pulled her to a quiet area and subjected her to assault and rape. Following the verdict a judge was asked to continue bail for first offender Azavedo ahead of sentencing next month. But judge Alistair Watson rejected the motion and remanded him in custody.

He told Azavedo: “You have been on bail until now. Bail was granted to you on the presumption of innocence.”

The judge said: “That presumption has gone. We know now that you are guilty of this serious criminal offence and in those circumstances it would be inappropriate to allow you to remain at liberty.”
